Tips for Exhibiting

How to Dress Up Your Display

Presentation is Everything
When setting up, think of the ways your space will appear to passersby.   Your space should reflect who you are and what you've made.   You want to show your items, without overcrowding your space.   So, if your work has a vintage vibe, for example, reflect that throughout your display, from the tablecloth right down to small details like the lettering you use for your labels and how many items you choose to display.   If your work is eco-friendly, you could use recycled materials for your display.   Or if your items are simple and modern, make your display crisp and uncluttered, and consider ditching a crumpled tablecloth for an alternative table covering.

Also, use all your available space and "think outside the table".    Is your work best presented on table-top or would it be better to be free standing on a floor easel or an alternative display?

Create a Focal Point
If you have more than one item to display, select your largest or most interesting piece and make that the centerpiece of your exhibit.   Place your other items around this focal point but don't overcrowd. The focal point does NOT necessarily have to be centered in your space.    Try some asymmetry, move the focal point to one side.

Build Up Your Exhibit
You want people's eyes to roam all around the space you have, not just skim across and move on to the next exhibit.   So instead of laying your items flat, use furniture, props, boxes and shelving to create height and bring everything up to eye level.   Adding height adds interest and gives you more space for your works.   Displaying things at various levels allows visitors of all sizes to view your work without stooping or standing on tiptoes!

Lighting
Consider adding lights, if you have them.    A well-lit display will really help to show off your works so, ask about power points in advance. Battery powered lights are a great option and available in all sorts of shapes.   The key thing to remember is that the light should illuminate your work, or highlight your best pieces, not blind your viewers.

Safety
If you use lights that need power with an extension cord, bring some duct-tape.    You will need to tape down all the cords that run across the floor.    Keep wires out of the way and ensure your table covering is not too long and your boxes are tidied away under your table and not causing a trip hazard.

Do a Mock-up at Home First
Eliminate the stress of setting up on the day by planning your exhibit in advance.   Table or floor dimensions are 36" x 48".    If your work is larger and requires more space, please contact David Strong (602)743-5273.    With multiple items, experiment with what goes where, and look at it from the front as a viewer would.    When you're happy with the layout, do a little sketch or take a photo on your phone, which you can refer to while you're setting up.

Thank you so much for choosing to exhibit!   We look forward to enjoying your talents!
